The Abrofo Mpoano Landing Beach, located near the Cape Coast Castle, was devoid of its usual bustling activities on Tuesday following the conclusion of the month-long closed fishing season. As fishers and fishmongers eagerly awaited the official reopening of the sea for fishing activities, the beach remained relatively quiet, with boats parked and awaiting further instructions from the Fisheries Ministry.
Some fishers expressed their hesitancy to resume fishing activities without an official announcement, citing recent incidents with the navy in Tema that led to the death of some fishers. Additionally, the impact of the closed season on their livelihoods was evident, as they struggled to support their families during the moratorium. While they acknowledged the importance of conserving fish stock, they called for the closed season to be scheduled in March or April, when fishing activity is traditionally low, to minimize the disruption to their livelihoods.
