The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ms. Lariba Zuweria Abudu, announced that the Ministry is in the process of amending the Persons with Disability Act 2006 to align with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability. The amendment aims to promote, protect, and ensure the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including education, health, employment, and transport, for all disabled individuals.

The reviewed Act proposes tax exemptions for employers and training for unemployed persons with disabilities to increase their employment rate. Ms. Abudu also highlighted the Ministry’s contributions to the development of the Employment Equity Policy by the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, which aims to promote equitable employment opportunities for PWDs in the labor market, particularly in the public service. These measures align with the Sustainable Development Goals Eight and 10, which seek to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth and reduce inequalities in income and representation among countries.
