The 13th Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship witnessed an electrifying display of strength and discipline as over 130 athletes from ten regions of Ghana competed at the Korean Community Sports Complex in Tema. With the theme “Strengthening Taekwondo for the 13th African Games,” the championship served as a platform to select a national team for the upcoming African Games in March 2024. After two days of intense competition, the Greater Accra Region emerged as the champions with an impressive tally of 103 points, securing five gold, four silver, and three bronze medals.
Michael Davidson from the Greater Accra Region was recognized as the Best Male Athlete, while Erica Tuagbor from the Central Region earned the title of Best Female Athlete. Additionally, Emmanuel Kofi Turkson and Patricia Kyeremaa from the Bono Region claimed the titles of Best Para Male and Best Para Female Athletes, respectively. The sport of Taekwondo, rooted in centuries of Korean history, has evolved into a highly popular martial art globally, emphasizing swift kicks, striking techniques, and spiritual development.
Mr. Lim Jung-Taek, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ghana, expressed his optimism that the championship would unveil exceptional athletes with the potential to represent Ghana at the highest level. He encouraged all participants, irrespective of selection outcomes, to use their experiences to strengthen their determination and improve their skills. The Korean Embassy’s commitment to promoting Taekwondo in Ghana and fostering friendship between the peoples of Korea and Ghana remains unwavering. Mr. Davis Nii Attuquaye Clottey, Vice President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, commended the Korean Embassy for their support in Taekwondo development and appealed for the scaling up of the Ambassador’s Cup. Taekwondo offers numerous physical and mental benefits, fostering discipline, respect, and a sense of community among practitioners.
